Where to stay in Innsbruck in winter: the best areas and hotels
For a Christmas market or city break, stay in the old town or on Maria-Theresien-Strasse, where the markets are a few minutes' walk away. For skiing, the city still works well thanks to the free ski buses, but Igls, Mutters and Axams put you minutes from the lifts with a pool or sauna for the evening. Around the Hauptbahnhof is best if you arrive by train, and Pradl and Amras give the best value.

Old town and the riverside: for Christmas markets and first visits
The car-free old town puts the Golden Roof and the Old Town Christmas market on your doorstep, and the Marktplatz market by the Inn is a short walk. In winter that means you can go out for an hour, come back to warm up and go out again. The Nordkette funicular leaves from the Congress station at the old town edge.
The catch for drivers is parking: old town hotels mostly use the public Altstadtgarage nearby, so check the hotel's page before you book.
City centre: Maria-Theresien-Strasse and the Hofburg
The streets south of the old town are the most practical all-round base: five to seven minutes' walk from the Golden Roof, beside the Maria-Theresien-Strasse market that stays open until 6 January, and close to the Hofburg, the Hofgarten and its LUMAGICA light trail. Ski buses stop at the Hofgarten coach park.

If you arrive by train, these hotels are two to five minutes from the platform, and the Golden Roof is 11 or 12 minutes' walk away up Maria-Theresien-Strasse. The Swarovski Crystal Worlds shuttle and the Stubaitalbahn tram to the Stubai valley both leave from the station.
Pradl, east of the station, is a residential district with lower prices and trams into the centre in a few minutes. It suits longer stays, families and anyone happy to ride in for the markets. Olympiaworld and its outdoor ice ring are nearby.
Igls: the village at the foot of the Patscherkofel
Igls sits on a sunny plateau above the city, below the Patscherkofel ski area, and buses run into Innsbruck in about ten minutes. It suits families and skiers who want the slopes close by, quiet nights and the city for the odd evening out.
South and west of the city, Mutters is a short trip from the Muttereralm and on the way to the Stubai valley, and Axams is about 8 km from the Axamer Lizum. Both have buses or trams into Innsbruck. Hotels here tend to be family-run, with half board, pools and saunas for after skiing.
Hall in Tirol has its own Advent market on the medieval square, an old town that is quieter than Innsbruck's, and trains to Innsbruck in about nine minutes. The Glungezer ski area is about 8 km away.
After a cold day at the markets or on the slopes, a hotel pool or sauna makes the evening. These four do it well, from a pool open around the clock to a heated rooftop infinity pool above Innsbruck.

If you are driving to a different ski area each day, a hotel with free parking near the A12 motorway saves time and money. Amras, on the east side of the city, has tram 3 into town and quick access to the motorway. In the city centre, a hotel with a ski room close to the Nordkette funicular does the same job without a car.
