New Year's Eve in Innsbruck 2026: Bergsilvester, fireworks over the Nordkette and where to stay
Innsbruck celebrates New Year's Eve as Bergsilvester on 30 and 31 December 2026: light projections on the old town buildings, a children's New Year's Eve on the 30th, open-air parties with live music and DJs on the 31st, and fireworks over the Nordkette at midnight. The parties are in the old town, so a hotel within walking distance is the best base. The detailed 2026 timetable had not been published in October; last year's ran from a brass band at 11:00 to clubbing after midnight.

Bergsilvester 2026 at a glance
Bergsilvester (mountain New Year's Eve) is the city's own celebration, organised by Innsbruck Marketing. The 2026 listing confirms the outline: artistic light projections around the city, a children's New Year's Eve on 30 December, a party mile with live music and DJs on 31 December, and a fireworks display over the Nordkette.
Times for 2026 were not yet published in October 2026. As a guide, the 2025/26 programme looked like this: light projections from 17:00 to 22:00 on the Hofburg, the Court Church, the cathedral, the City Tower, the Marktplatz and the Inn; on 31 December a morning concert by Dixie Brass Tyrol in front of the Golden Roof from 11:00, the New Year's Eve run through town in the afternoon, open-air parties in front of the Hofburg and on the Marktplatz from 21:00, fireworks at midnight, then a club night in the Congress Innsbruck until the early hours.
Children's New Year's Eve on 30 December
The day before New Year's Eve belongs to families. In 2025 the children's New Year's Eve (Kindersilvester) ran from 13:00 to 18:00 in the old town and on the square in front of the Hofburg, with games stations and funfair rides, and finished with a concert at 17:00. The 2026 edition is confirmed for 30 December.
On the mountains, the Serlesbahnen in the Stubai valley hold a children's New Year's Eve party at the top station, and Axamer Lizum holds a pre-New Year's Eve party at the Hoadl House on 30 December 2026.
The classic family half day in Innsbruck: ride the Zaha Hadid funicular up from the old town, spend a couple of hours with wolves, bears and lynx at the Alpine Zoo, and carry on to the Hungerburg viewpoint before riding back.

The New Year fireworks are fired from the Seegrube on the Nordkette, at 1,905 m and straight above the city, so they light up the mountain wall rather than a single square. The old town, the Marktplatz and the riverbank along the Inn all face the Nordkette, and the open-air parties in front of the Hofburg and on the Marktplatz are where most people gather.
To see them from above, the hotel rooftop bars by the station and in the centre look north to the mountain. The Nordkette cable car sells its own New Year's Eve ticket; its details were not online in October 2026, so look at nordkette.com in December.
The one mountain trip almost every visitor should make: from the old town to 2,256 m in about 20 minutes, with the whole of Innsbruck below you and the Karwendel behind.

If you would rather start the night in the snow, several ski areas covered by the SKI plus CITY Pass hold their own parties. Axamer Lizum hosts a pre-New Year's Eve party at the Hoadl House on 30 December 2026, Hochoetz in the Ötztal holds a New Year's Eve party on the mountain, and the Serlesbahnen in Mieders throw a children's party at the top station.
Two Christmas markets are still open on 31 December 2026: Maria-Theresien-Strasse from 11:00 to 19:00 and the Hungerburg from 12:00 to 17:00. The outdoor rink at Olympiaworld opens 12:00 to 16:50, and ICE MAGIC on Landhausplatz keeps holiday hours of 10:00 to 21:00.
Shops may open from 06:00 to 17:00 on New Year's Eve, food shops until 18:00, and shops selling sweets, flowers and New Year's Eve goods until 20:00. New Year's Day is a public holiday. The Golden Roof Museum is closed on 31 December and 1 January, and Audioversum opens only 10:00 to 14:00 on 31 December.
The best-value way to see Innsbruck if you plan a full day or two of sightseeing: the Nordkette cable cars, Swarovski Crystal Worlds with its shuttle, the museums and all the city buses and trams on one card.

For the last four New Year's Eves, the Land Tirol has made all local public transport free for the night. In 2025/26 no ticket was needed from 20:00 on 31 December until 05:00 on 1 January, on IVB trams and buses in Innsbruck including its five Nightliner lines, on VVT regional buses and Nightliners, and on regional trains including the night S-Bahn, which ran as double trains. Long-distance trains (Railjet, EuroCity, Nightjet and others) were not included.
The offer for 2026/27 is usually announced shortly before Christmas. Staying within walking distance of the old town means you do not need it at all.
The parties, projections and best views are all in the old town and along the Inn, so the closer you stay, the easier the night. Old town hotels are a few minutes from the Hofburg and the Marktplatz, and Maria-Theresien-Strasse is a short walk south. Book early: New Year's Eve falls in the Austrian school Christmas holidays, which run from 24 December 2026 to 6 January 2027.
Two days later the ski jumpers arrive. The Innsbruck leg of the 75th Four Hills Tournament is at the Bergisel on 2 and 3 January 2027, part of a tournament that runs from 28 December to 6 January. The stadium has standing places only, and tickets are sold through the official Ski Austria shop.
An easy win for almost everyone: a short trip from the centre to an Olympic ski jump, a lift up Zaha Hadid's tower and one of the best views of Innsbruck from the terrace on top.
