The Alpine Zoo sits at 750 m on the slope below the Nordkette, above the rooftops of Innsbruck. You reach it on the Hungerburgbahn, which has its own zoo stop or by bus W from Marktplatz.
Inside, paths wind up and down the hillside past around 150 alpine species in natural enclosures, terrariums and aquariums: brown bears, wolves, lynx, elk, otters and birds of prey, plus nearly every fish species in the Alps. There are walk-in enclosures and aviaries where you get close to the animals.
The zoo works for conservation too. It takes part in several European breeding programmes and takes in injured wild animals. Two hours is about right; finish at the Animal Meal bistro, which has around 150 seats indoors and out.
The zoo is open every day: 09:00 to 18:00 from April to October and 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March.
In winter
Most animals stay active through the winter, and a quiet snowy morning is a lovely time to visit; marmots, reptiles and amphibians rest until spring. Open 09:00 to 17:00 every day, including Christmas holidays.
In summer
From March the birds court and build nests, and from April to June there are young ibex, chamois and deer, says the zoo. Open until 18:00 from April to October.
