Alpine Zoo and Hungerburg funicular combi ticket

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 729 GetYourGuide reviewers

The classic family half day in Innsbruck: ride the Zaha Hadid funicular up from the old town, spend a couple of hours with wolves, bears and lynx at the Alpine Zoo, and carry on to the Hungerburg viewpoint before riding back. Simple, good value and open all year.

Starts inInnsbruck city centreAll year

From the Hungerburgbahn station beside Congress Innsbruck, Rennweg 3, the funicular climbs over the Inn and up the hillside to the Alpine Zoo stop in about 7 minutes.

The zoo sits at 750 m on just over five hectares of slope, with around 2,000 animals from some 150 alpine species in natural enclosures, terrariums and aquariums. You will see wolves, brown bears, lynx, eagles, otters and elk, plus nearly every fish species found in the Alps. The zoo says no other zoo has such a complete collection of alpine wildlife, and it has had several world-first breeding successes.

After the zoo, the ticket lets you ride one more minute up to the Hungerburg at 860 m, where the platform looks out over the whole city. Then take the funicular back down to the old town. Allow two and a half to three hours in all.

In winter

The zoo is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00, and most animals stay active through the winter; marmots, reptiles and amphibians rest. From 20 November the Hungerburg has a small Christmas market with ten stalls, one stop further up the line.

In summer

From April to October the zoo is open until 18:00. Spring and early summer bring young ibex, chamois and deer, and the Hungerburg is the start of easy walks to nearby huts.
