Munich Airport to Innsbruck: train, bus, shuttle, private transfer and car

The easiest way from Munich Airport to Innsbruck is the S8 S-Bahn to München Ost and a direct railjet from there: about 2 hours 14 minutes in total, every two hours from 07:04 to 21:04 in the timetable from 13 December 2026. FlixBus runs direct from Terminal 2 to Innsbruck from €16.98, and Deutsche Bahn's Super Sparpreis Europa fares start at €19.99. For door to door, book a shared shuttle or a private transfer; drivers cover roughly 190 km and need an Austrian vignette (10 days €12.80 in 2026).

By S-Bahn and railjet: the quickest public route

In the provisional timetable from 13 December 2026, the S8 leaves München Flughafen Terminal at 4 minutes past every odd hour (07:04, 09:04 and so on until 21:04) and reaches München Ost in 29 minutes. Ten minutes later a direct railjet leaves München Ost and arrives at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof 1 hour 35 minutes after that, so the whole journey takes 2 hours 14 minutes with one change. The 07:04 gets you to Innsbruck at 09:18, the 21:04 at 23:18. An earlier connection at 06:31 takes 2 hours 43 minutes.

Going home, railjets leave Innsbruck at 42 minutes past every even hour from 06:42 and reach the airport terminal 2 hours 34 minutes later, with a change at München Ost.

The S-Bahn station is below the Munich Airport Center between the terminals; from Terminal 1 follow the green S signs. Before 13 December 2026, and during engineering works, the planner may route you through München Hbf or add a bus leg, so check your exact date in the ÖBB or DB planner.

Getting to Innsbruck: by train from Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Verona, by air and by car

Train tickets: Sparschiene, Super Sparpreis and the S-Bahn leg

Cheap train tickets come in limited numbers per train, so book early. Deutsche Bahn's Super Sparpreis Europa to Austria starts at €19.99 in second class and €29.99 in first, bookable up to 6 months ahead; it ties you to the long-distance train you booked and cannot be exchanged or cancelled after the first 3 hours. ÖBB sells its own Sparschiene fares on the same trains, also up to 6 months ahead.

Search from München Flughafen Terminal so the planner shows the S-Bahn leg. If your ticket starts at München Ost or München Hbf, buy an MVV ticket for the S-Bahn: in 2026 the Airport-City-Day-Ticket costs €17.50 (€32.60 for a group of 2 to 5) and is valid until 6:00 the next morning, while a single trip across zones M to 5 costs €15.10.

Direct coaches: FlixBus and the Lufthansa Express Bus

In Innsbruck the coaches stop at Südbahnstrasse near the Hauptbahnhof and at Olympiaworld. Car hire and the drive over the border

Car hire desks are at the airport, and the drive is roughly 190 km on motorways: round Munich on the A 99, the A 8 towards Salzburg, the A 93 at the Inntal junction to Kufstein, then the A 12 Inntal motorway to Innsbruck.

In Austria you need a vignette on motorways and expressways. 2026 car prices: 1 day €9.60, 10 days €12.80, 2 months €32. From 2027 only the digital vignette, linked to the number plate, is sold, so ask whether a German hire car already has one. The A 12 between the border at Kufstein and Kufstein-Süd is exempt.

Winter tyres: Austria requires them from 1 November to 15 April whenever there is snow, slush or ice on the road, and in Germany winter conditions require tyres with the alpine (mountain and snowflake) symbol. Confirm winter tyres when you book the car.
