The Goldener Adler has been taking in travellers on Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse since around 1390, which makes it one of the oldest inns in Europe. Goethe stayed here twice and Andreas Hofer lodged here after his first victory over Napoleon's troops. Today the Hackl family runs it, and it sits in the pedestrian heart of the old town, a short stroll from the Golden Roof, the Hofburg and the river Inn.
Behind the old walls, all 43 rooms have been fully renovated, with air conditioning, a safe and tea and coffee making. There are three categories (Classic, Tradition and Deluxe), connecting family rooms and one wheelchair-accessible Deluxe room. Downstairs, the restaurant serves Tyrolean and Austrian cooking every day from 11:30, and the wine bar in the Goethe Lounge pours regional wines by the glass. It suits couples, history lovers and anyone who wants to step straight out into the old town lanes.
