This is not a tour from Innsbruck. You book a ticket collection time at the International Ticket and Travel Center inside Füssen station in Bavaria, and the time you choose decides your castle entry: collect at 09:30 for an 11:35 entry, or at 11:45 for a 14:05 entry.
From Innsbruck by public transport, the ÖBB timetable shows the earliest connection on a weekday leaving Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof at 06:38 and reaching Füssen at 10:31, with three changes via Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Reutte; that is just under four hours. So by train and bus, book the 11:45 collection. Driving over the Fern Pass takes about two hours, which makes the 09:30 slot possible with a very early start.
At the office you get your original tickets, a printed map and tips. Then you make your own way to Hohenschwangau by local bus, car, bike or on foot. From there it is a 30 to 40 minute walk up a steep road, or a shuttle bus or horse carriage most of the way. The operator says to allow at least 90 minutes between collecting your tickets and reaching the castle gate, and to be there 10 minutes before your entry time.
Inside, the official audio-guided tour takes about 30 minutes through King Ludwig II's rooms, followed by the historic kitchen and the balcony with its wide views. Plan on about an hour at the castle. On a weekday the ÖBB timetable has a 17:13 connection from Füssen that reaches Innsbruck at 20:36.
In winter
From 16 October to 27 March the castle opens 10:00 to 16:00, and it is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. The shuttle bus does not run when there is snow or ice on the road, and the Marienbrücke may close in bad weather, so wear good boots for the walk up.
In summer
From 28 March to 15 October the castle opens 09:00 to 18:00. This is when the official tickets sell out fastest, which is where a reserved slot like this one is most useful; expect crowds at the viewpoints.
