Neuschwanstein day trip from Innsbruck (private tour)

Rated 5 out of 5 by 3 GetYourGuide reviewers

The easy way to see Neuschwanstein from Innsbruck: a private driver-guide picks you up in town, books your castle slot and handles the parking and roads. You pay the castle tickets on the day, and the drive is about two hours each way on mountain roads.

Starts inInnsbruck city centreAll year

Your guide meets you at the Markthalle or the Bahnhofcenter in Innsbruck. The first stretch is about an hour and a half by car through the Austrian Alps to Reutte, where you can stop for about 50 minutes at Highline 179, a long pedestrian suspension bridge strung between two castle ruins.

Another half hour brings you to Hohenschwangau in Bavaria. There are optional photo stops at Hohenschwangau Castle and the Alpsee, then the walk or bus up towards Neuschwanstein, with a stop on the Marienbrücke for the classic view of the castle.

Your guide has reserved a skip-the-line slot, so you go straight into the official tour of about an hour, learning the story of King Ludwig II who built it. The castle has around 270 steps, and the last part of the approach is uphill.

The drive home takes about two hours, past the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, and the clear water of the Blindsee, with time to stop for photos. You are dropped back where you started.

In winter

The castle opens 10:00 to 16:00 from 16 October to 27 March and closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. In snow the castle shuttle bus does not run and the Marienbrücke may close, so the guide adjusts the stops; wear warm boots.

In summer

From 28 March to 15 October the castle opens 09:00 to 18:00 and official tickets sell out quickly, so a reserved slot matters most. Long days leave time for every optional stop.

  • First-time visitors without a car
  • Photographers who want the Marienbrücke and lakes

Before you book

  1. Castle tickets are paid on the day

The tour price covers the car, the guide and the reservation, but not the entry tickets themselves.

What to do. Budget €23.50 per adult for Neuschwanstein, plus any optional bridge or second castle tickets.

  2. Winding mountain roads

Much of the drive is on mountain roads, and the operator says the tour is not suitable for people prone to motion sickness without precautions.

What to do. Take travel sickness tablets before you set off if you need them.
