Hotel Maximilian is the Penz family's hotel on Marktgraben, the street that runs along the edge of the old town. The Golden Roof is three minutes' walk away and the base station of the Nordkette funicular six, so the old town lanes and the mountain are both close at hand. There are 51 rooms and suites in a classic style, all air-conditioned, from economy doubles to 35 square metre junior suites and family rooms with a bunk bed.
Breakfast is a buffet with homemade muesli and rye bread, served in the breakfast room and in a traditional Swiss pine Zirbenstube, and there is a lounge bar for the evening. The practical touches stand out: ski and snowboard storage with a boot dryer, a secure room for bikes, a lift, and a night porter once reception closes. It suits skiers, families and anyone on a short city break who wants the centre on the doorstep.
