Experience Tirol immersive show in Innsbruck

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 33 GetYourGuide reviewers

A lively one-hour introduction to Tyrol that works in any weather: five rooms of holograms, virtual reality and 360-degree projections, right in the shopping centre on Maria-Theresien-Strasse. Families with children over 6, first-time visitors and anyone caught by rain will enjoy it. The one thing to know: it is closed on public holidays.

Starts inInnsbruck city centreAll year

Experience Tirol is inside Kaufhaus Tyrol at Maria-Theresien-Strasse 31, in the middle of the main shopping street. Shows start every 20 minutes; arrive 15 minutes before your slot, scan your ticket at the entrance and speak to one of the Experience Hosts, who will set you up with the free audio guide in English or Italian.

The story follows a father, Thomas, and his daughter, Anna, through five themed rooms covering Tyrol's history, culture, nature, art and sport. Each room uses a different technology, from holograms to a virtual reality journey back in time and 360-degree projections all around you.

Along the way you watch a ski jumper launch from the Bergisel, see the mountain fires burning on the summits, walk through Emperor Maximilian's Innsbruck as it was around 1500 and glide over the high peaks of Tyrol.

The whole show takes about an hour, so it slots neatly between a morning in the old town and an afternoon on the mountain. Lockers are available for your things, subject to space.

In winter

A warm, dry hour in the centre on a snowy or grey day, and a short walk from the Christmas market on Maria-Theresien-Strasse. It is closed on public holidays, including 8 December, Christmas Day, St Stephen's Day, New Year's Day and 6 January.

In summer

The ideal plan B when cloud covers the Nordkette or a summer storm rolls in, and a cool break on a hot afternoon. Opening hours run to 19:00 on weekdays, so it also fits after a day in the mountains.
