Imster Schlucht rafting on the Inn

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 351 GetYourGuide reviewers

The classic white-water day out from Innsbruck: big, named waves on the Inn, but a beginner-level trip that families with children from 10 can join. You need to be able to swim and to get yourself to Haiming, half an hour west of the city.

Starts inHaimingSummer

You meet at the Cankick outdoor centre in Haiming, about 30 minutes from Innsbruck on the A12 or 33 minutes by direct train to Haiming station. Arrive 15 minutes before your start: you get a wetsuit, river shoes and the rest of the kit, all washed and disinfected, and there are lockers and changing rooms.

A minibus takes the group to the put-in at Imst. After a safety briefing in the boat, your guide steers you into the Imster Schlucht, a gorge of the Inn with waves the rafting crews call Memminger Walze, Oetzschlag and Chaos.

The run covers about 14 km. Between the rapids there are calmer stretches to look up at the gorge walls and the mountains. Everyone paddles, and the people at the front work hardest.

The minibus brings you back to the centre for a hot shower and the house rafting schnapps. The centre has a restaurant with a big terrace if you want to stay on for Tyrolean food. Allow about three to four hours in all.

In summer

The operator runs this trip from 1 May to 15 October, with starts at 09:30, 13:30 and 16:30. Early summer brings the most snowmelt and the liveliest water; a hot day in July or August makes the splashes welcome.
