You meet at the Cankick outdoor centre in Haiming, at the mouth of the Ötztal, about 30 minutes from Innsbruck. You are given a thick neoprene wetsuit, canyoning shoes, harness and helmet, then a minibus takes the group up to the Alpenrosenklamm.
After a full safety briefing, the first move is an abseil from a bridge straight into the gorge, past a waterfall. Then come a 4-metre abseil, a water slide and a stepped section, followed by two longer abseils of 7 and 15 metres and the first 4-metre jumps. Your guide shows you each move, and you can bypass any jump.
The highlight is a natural rock slide about 8 metres long and 5 metres high, worn smooth by the water. Your guide teaches the technique and you can go down a second time if you like.
The canyon then opens out and a final 10-metre abseil takes you out. Back at the centre there are warm showers, roomy changing rooms and a canyoning schnapps. The guide can take photos on a waterproof camera if you ask. Plan on about four hours in all.
