You meet at the Innsbruck Information hall at Burggraben 3, at the edge of the old town. Arrive 10 minutes early and look for the table with the Stadtführung (city tour) sign for the Welcome Tour.
The walk starts on Maria-Theresien-Strasse, Innsbruck's baroque boulevard and now a pedestrian promenade, then turns into the narrow medieval lanes of the old town. The guide covers the city from its beginnings to today: the age of Emperor Maximilian I, architecture, art and how people lived here then and now.
You see the Hofburg, the only imperial palace of that name outside Vienna, and step inside the baroque Cathedral of St James when it is open to visitors. Entry is free; taking photos inside needs a €1 photo ticket sold in the church.
The walk takes you down to the Inn Bridge for the view of the Nordkette rising above the river. After about an hour you are free to go, with a few tips from the guide for the rest of your stay.
