Your guide meets you at your hotel in the centre or at an agreed point in town, and the start time is set when you book. Tours run in English, German, French or Dutch.
The walk opens in the Hofgarten, the former imperial garden, then passes the Hofburg to the Court Church with Emperor Maximilian's tomb and its bronze figures, the Schwarze Mander. Next is the baroque Cathedral of St James, home to Lucas Cranach the Elder's painting Mariahilf; entry is free outside services.
From there you stroll through the old town to the Golden Roof, then through narrow lanes of colourful houses down to the Inn Bridge for the view of the painted façades with the Nordkette behind them. If you like modern architecture, the guide can add Zaha Hadid's Hungerburg funicular stations, the House of Music, David Chipperfield's Kaufhaus Tyrol and Dominique Perrault's Rathaus Galerien.
The tour ends on Maria-Theresien-Strasse at St Anne's Column and the Triumphal Arch, or back at your hotel if you prefer. Along the way the guide covers history, daily life, traditions and food, and there is always time for your questions.
