The City Tower stands at Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 21, a few steps from the Golden Roof in the heart of the old town. You exchange your voucher at the cashier at the entrance and head for the stairs.
The tower was finished in 1450, about 50 years before the Golden Roof, beside the old town hall; the onion dome came a century later. Guards kept watch from here for almost 450 years, warning the town of fire, and the lower floors once served as a prison.
A spiral staircase of 133 steps takes you to the viewing platform at 31 metres. From the top you look down on the medieval roofs and the Golden Roof, across the Inn to the Nordkette, and south to the Bergisel and the Patscherkofel.
Allow about half an hour up and down, which makes it an easy add-on to a morning in the old town.
In winter
From 13 November to 23 December the old town Christmas market fills the square below you, and brass players perform Christmas music from the Golden Roof balcony every day in the late afternoon. Clear, cold days give the sharpest views of the snowy Nordkette.
In summer
In summer the listing suggests going up towards sunset, when the light turns warm on the mountains and the roofs. Long days mean you can fit it in after a mountain outing.
